80歳くらいの年配の紳士が指の抜糸をしてもらいにやってきた。

彼は9時に約束があって急いでいたので私はすぐに診察することにした。

傷を診てみると、もうほとんど治癒状態で私は抜糸をすることにした。

傷の処置をしながら、なぜそんなにお急ぎなのですか、と訊いた。

老紳士は、老人ホームの妻といっしょに朝食を摂ることになっているんです、と答えた。

彼の妻の健康を尋ねると、認知症で老人ホームにすこし前から入居しているんです、と言った。

それでは遅れると奥さんが困りますね、と問うと、

老紳士は、妻は数年来もう私のことが分からないのです、と答えた。

「もうあなたが分からないというのに、あなたは毎朝奥さんのところに行かれるんですか？」

紳士は私の手を軽くたたいて微笑んで言った。

「妻はもう私のことが分からないですが、私はまだ妻のことが分かるんです」
